Tristao header the difference for City

Report by Jayden Lihou

Cockburn stay second at the halfway mark of the the NPL WA season after holding on for a 1-0 win over southern neighbours Armadale at Alfred Skeet Reserve on Saturday.

A Rueben Tristao header in the ninth minute proved to be the difference as City remain only three points behind leaders Bayswater.

Cockburn captain Euen Grant praised his side’s defence and hopes to take the momentum of this Round 13 victory into the second half of the season.

“Armadale made it really tough for us in the second half but in the end we held out which we couldn’t do last week and it’s a good three points for the team.” he said.

“I think collectively as a team we defended for our lives and when it counted in the big moments in defence we stood up well.

“We’re happy to finish the first half of the season on a high and hopefully we can continue where we left off in the second half.

The away side began the game with intent and took the lead when a deep cross found Tristao at the far post and he powered the ball into the back of the net.

Chris Jackson had a chance to level the scores for Armadale just eight minutes later when he was found by a clever lay-off, however his strike was kept out by keeper Luke Radonich.

Cockburn had a chance to make it 2-0 in the 35th minute when a low cross found David Araya, who tried to slide the ball home but keeper Sam Hutchings was equal to the task.

Hutchings was involved again early on in the second half when he saved a powerful effort at the near post from Luccas Mello after he had beaten a defender with a smart turn.

Armadale’s best opportunity came from a corner in the 57th minute when a header Chris Jackson was cleared off the line.

From there on "the Army" continued to put the pressure on but were unable to find the decisive final ball, much to the disappointment of Armadale coach John O’Reilly who thought his side deserved more out of the game.

“I think a draw would have been a fair result over the 90 minutes,” he said.

“They sat quite deep and didn’t allow us many opportunities, so defensively they played a sound game, but we were just lacking that final ball.

“At the end of the day we put in a good performance and didn’t get the result, so we have to take that on the chin and hopefully next week we can put the ball into the back of the net.”
