MATCH WRAP: Joy for Joondalup after first win

Football West News

Bayswater City went three points clear at the top of the National Premier Leagues WA on Saturday but it was at the foot of the table where the celebrations took place.

Joondalup United finally collected their first win of the season at the 12th attempt as they beat previously in-form Inglewood United 3-1 at Percy Doyle Reserve.

“I’m absolutely buzzing, we thoroughly deserved all three points. We controlled things throughout and played the game on our own terms,” coach Nick Jennings said.

Goals from Callum Stocks, Sam Wynne and Alex Wild gave the league's bottom club the victory as Inglewood coach Andy Keogh criticised his team's display following three straight wins.

“I’m not happy with the performance. They haven’t won a game all year and we’re the first team to lose to them, it’s not good enough.” he said.

Joondalup are still deep in trouble but at least they now have second-bottom Floreat Athena in their sights. Floreat went down 2-1 to Subiaco on the weekend after youngster Robert Harding came off the bench to score the winning goal.

Subi moved out of the bottom three to be replaced by Sorrento, whose 2-1 defeat at Armadale was their sixth loss in seven matches.

Back to the top of the table and Bayswater's quality told as they brushed aside Forrestfield United 4-0 at Wildlife Safari Stadium.

David Stokoe, Gian Albano, Paul Lloyd and Luke Salmon were on target for Bayswater and captain Trent Kay said the reigning champions were relishing the close nature of this season's competition.

“It’s the tightest it’s been since I’ve been playing and I’ve been playing for 10 years. It’s good, it’s more competitive and I love it," he said.

Second-placed Cockburn City looked set to match Bayswater when they led Perth Glory at Dalmatinac Park thanks to Cameron Edwards' first-half goal against his former club.

But Glory have made a habit of scoring late this season and they did so again on Saturday when Henry Hore and Walter Scott struck in the final 10 minutes to pull off a 2-1 win.

After two home losses in which they conceded 10 goals, ECU Joondalup could have done without skipper Daryl Nicol missing a penalty after two minutes.

Fortunately for Dale McCulloch's side Gordon Smith scored soon after. And although Perth SC improved in the final quarter following the introduction of Andreas Theodosiades, home keeper Johnny Perkins was inspired in keeping out the Azzurri.

In the other Round 12 fixture Stirling Lions moved into the top half following a 3-0 win over Balcatta. David Micevski, Alex Tanevski and Dhhors Chol netted for Keegan Ashley's team who have made their way into the top half.
