Booysen treble in Subi romp

Report by Matthew Corvi

Joshua Booysen scored a hat-trick against his old team as Subiaco defeated Joondalup United 4-0 in a one-sided encounter at Percy Doyle Reserve.

Despite a performance worthy of man of the match from home keeper James Bosdet in the first half of Saturday night’s match, Subiaco still put four goals past a despondent Joondalup United side, who have conceded 18 goals in their first four NPL WA fixtures.

“I’m absolutely delighted with the performance. Can’t fault it. We’re full of confidence going into next week,” Subiaco coach Ian McMurray said.

“It was a scrappy first half but we went on and had a dominant second half.

Booysen opened the scoring in the 16th minute with a simple header past Bosdet from a routine Subiaco set-piece.

Subi should have been out of sight by half-time but some heroic keeping from Bosdet kept the deficit to just one goal.

But the away side doubled their lead in the 58th minute through Rory Feely, who managed to put the ball past the outrushing Bosdet.

Referee Nico Hoyle gave a total of nine cards in a feisty encounter, including a red card to United’s Luke Serra for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity.

With Joondalup down to 10 men, Booysen put the game beyond doubt. He bagged his second in the 69th minute, then eight minutes later he got himself the match ball.

Joondalup coach Nick Jennings was happy with his side’s performance, despite the result.

“We gave away a poor goal from a set piece early but we created multiple chances after that. Despite the red card we kept going and I was pleased with our character,” he said.

“The only way from here is up. I’m a positive person and we will remain upbeat and aim to get our first points next week.”
