Season Preview: Bayswater City

Football West News

After a slow start to the 2017 season, Bayswater City powered home to take out the title on the final day of the season.

Coach Chris Coyne hasn’t wasted any time adding quality to the squad, bringing in Arron Maplestone, Gian Albano, Clark Keltie, Jake Sardelic and Adam Harris.

“We never rest on our laurels as everyone is trying to beat us every week," he said.

"If we take our finger off the pulse they will go past us and I am trying to stop that.

“When you have been the team to beat for five years, everyone is trying to raise the bar so we have to grow and get better as well every year.

“We just want to keep everyone fit and ensure the hunger, desire and enjoyment is there. We have a great group of people and  it’s our responsibility to get the best out of them.”

Coyne said the league is wide open this season and he said it could come down to the wire like last season. “Inglewood, Perth and ECU will be ones to watch this season,” he said.

“Inglewood have a very experienced team and have been there for the last few seasons, Perth as always are consistent and ECU have really made an effort to keep big players and are looking to win the league.’

City will be captained again by Trent Kay, but Coyne said he has many leaders at the club. “Trent is my skipper for the fifth year, and he is very consistent and respected by his peers,” he explained.

The former Glory defender said his side are fit and ready to go, and new signing Gian Albano is looking good in training.

“Gian has been great since he joined us and is super exciting. He should be playing at A-League level,” Coyne said.

“The boys are fit and firing and disappointed in themselves after losing in the first round of the Night Series.”

Bayswater City will open their NPLWA season when they host Balcatta at Frank Drago Reserve on Sunday, February 25 at 5.00pm.
