Season Preview: Cockburn City

Football West News

Last season was disappointing for Cockburn City, but there is a new spring in the step of coach Scott Miller as he looks to bring success to the Cockerels.

The club haven’t won the Premier League since 1996 and Miller will be looking for an improvement from last season’s ninth place finish.

They have started the campaign well reaching the semi-final of the Night Series.  The former Perth Glory winger said things are going well and believes the new season will be interesting. “Pre-season for us has been positive, and the lads have been working very hard,” he said.

“The Night Series success is good, but you don't really get to see how other teams are travelling, so it will be an interesting season and I’d say the usual suspects will be up there again.”

After a great start last season Cockburn fell away and missed the finals, and Miller said they need to improve in 2018. “It was a great start last year, but we probably didn't go on with it,” he explained.

“But with our good Night Series campaign it has given us a chance for more game time in competitive games, but most important for us is to keep our lads fit and healthy, that probably let us down a bit last year.”

Miller has added some strike power to his squad signing strikers Luccas Mello from Balcatta and Anthony Skorich from Armadale as they look to add to their 38 goals last season.

He is pleased with a number of his younger players in pre-season and picked Daniel Robinson as one to watch this season, alongsidefit skipper Euen Grant.

“Daniel has played well in the Night Series and has scored some goals, he is full of energy, and very positive with the ball,” Miller explained.

Cockburn City will start their NPLWA season against Subiaco at Dalmatinac Park on Saturday, February 24, with the kick off 7.00pm
