Season Preview: Floreat Athena

Football West News

Floreat Athena will go into the new season feeling confident after winning the NPLWA Night Series final on Saturday.

Coach Howard Tweats joined the club towards the end of last season and has taken no time to set his plans out.

“Pre-season has gone really well," he said.

"Having an extended run in the Night Series made us prepare for competitive fixtures rather than regulation friendly games, so hopefully come game one we will have a sharp focus, be organised and confident in approach,” he said.

Tweats is well aware there are some good teams in the league but knows his side is keen to improve this season.

“You can never discount the big hitters of Bayswater, Inglewood and Perth," he said.

"They always have the draw on players, coupled with quality coaches and are always organised and geared for success."

“But there was a feeling of underachievement from last season with the way the group tailed off, so there is definitely an appetite to redress itand challenge those clubs come the last game of the campaign.”

There is a good mix of youth and experience at the club and Tweats is relishing the challenge of coaching the club.

“Dean Evans is our captain, a true leader by example, exemplary reader of the game who commands the middle of the park," he said.

"His balance, vision and passing range allows him to impose himself in any game whilst his aggressive defensive qualities don't get noticed or given the credit it deserves."

“One of the youngsters is Keylun Pollard, who has been hiding away for a couple of seasons now in the NPLWA without being fully exposed. He has pace and technical qualities that will be an asset to our forward areas. He has already shown us his desire to develop all areas of his game to be a valued fit in our structure. I firmly believe he will have a break out season.”

Floreat Athena will begin their season against newly promoted Forrestfield United at Hartfield Park on Friday, February 23rd, 8.00pm
