Bayswater snatch points at the death

Report by Matthew Corvi

Bayswater City claimed all three points in their PS4 NPLWA clash against Joondalup United on Saturday with two injury time goals to Gustavo Marulanda.

Arran Maplestone’s penalty cancelled out Bor Bor Sam’s opener just before half time, before Marulanda struck twice in the dying stages.

Bayswater coach Chris Coyne was pleased with the result, but felt his side could have played better.

“I’m delighted with the result, but the performance in the second half was poor,” he said.

“In the end, no one really cares about how you play, it’s all about the result.”

Joondalup United coach Neil Jennings was extremely disappointed with end of the game.

“I’m absolutely gutted,” he said.

“Performance wise, I couldn’t have asked any more from the boys.

“We switched off for a second and it cost us the game, but I thought we were the better team today.”

Bayswater dominated the start of the game with Andrija Jukic missing the best chances to put his side ahead.

But three minutes before half time Bayswater did find the breakthrough.

Sam turned his marker and fired off a shot that James Bosdet got his hand to, but couldn’t stop from going in.

The second half began in a similar fashion to the first as Joondalup defended resolutely against a Bayswater team controlling possession.

Despite the hosts' dominance, Joondalup United were given a route back into the game, when the referee awarded them a penalty kick.

Visiting captain Arran Maplestone made no mistake with the penalty, powering it into the bottom corner of the net and giving Devon Spence no chance.

Joondalup United thought they had done enough to claim a valuable point as the game ticked into stoppage time but Bayswater had other ideas.

Firsly, Marulanda got on the end of a ball played across the face of goal, to tap in from close range.

Then, as Joondalup committed the goalkeeper forward in search of an equaliser, Marulanda broke clear to walk the ball into the net and secure the three points.
