Cockburn hold off Subiaco to end winless run

Report by Jayden Lihou

Cockburn have ended a winless run of five matches after they withstood a late surge to defeat Subiaco 1-0 in round 14 of the PS4 NPLWA season at Rosalie Park on Saturday.

The away-side took the lead early in the first-half and managed to hold on to their slender lead despite Subiaco dominating the possession for most of the match.

Cockburn captain Euen Grant said that he is relieved that his side could hold on to secure an all-important win.

“Subiaco made it really hard for us, they gave it all they got but our boys showed character and finally we got that much needed win,” he said.

“It’s been hard to come by goals recently, and we have been conceding a few as well, so it was a big relief to hold on and get the three points.

After an intense start to the match from both sides, Cockburn took the lead in the 17th minute during a scramble in the box.

Kenel Mouithys was first to the ball and his quick strike found the back of the net to put his side up 1-0.

The Cockerels had a chance to double their in the 31st minute after Losene Dullen cut the ball back to Mouithys who was waiting at the edge of the box.

Mouithys opted to shoot first-time and his shot would have found the top corner had it not been tipped over the bar by Subiaco keeper Ryan Montgomery.

Montgomery was called into action again early on in the second-half when his diving save denied a curled effort from Gian Albano from outside the box.

Subiaco had a chance to level the scores in the 53rd minute when David Perich crossed it to Nathan Smith who was waiting at the far-post, but Smith’s side-footed volley was denied by keeper Luke Radonich.

Subiaco player-manager Ian McMurray thought that the only thing missing from his side today were goals.

“We worked hard today and at times dominated possession but we didn’t take our chances today and that’s what cost us in the end,” he said.

Subiaco created one final chance in the 89th minute when the ball was played to substitute Carlin Feely on the wing.

Feely made his way into the box late but his strike was saved by the legs of Radonich with the scoreline finishing 1-0 in an invigorating match.

McMurray felt his side could have gotten more out of the match.

“At times we got the ball into good areas and created some good chances, but if you don’t score goals, you don’t win games and that’s what happed with us today.

“We are improving every week but we are still coming away with nothing, but we have got to lift our heads and keep pushing and hopefully our luck will change and we’ll get a few points on the board.”
