Season Preview: Perth SC

Football West News

After taking out the PS4 NPLWA and The West Australian Top Four Cup last season, Perth SC are relying on self-belief, consistency and squad depth  to push for more success this season.

But coach Ramon Falzon knows just how tough it will be to repeat last season’s achievement.

“We know there are variables that are beyond our control,” he said. “However, the playing group is focused on those three key deliverables, so that we give it our best shot to be competitive from the first NPL game till the last game of the season.

“Our players know from the experience we gained last year that we cannot focus or be emotional on our position on the standings after three or seven or 20 games.

“The only standing that matters is the one after 26 games.  So, as a playing group, we’ll focus game by game and work hard to meet our internal key performance indicators.”

With Clark Keltie continuing his role as captain for the fourth year, Falzon is confident the team will be successful.

“Although the captaincy is a privilege, in my opinion the captaincy by itself does not define a leadership role,” he said.

“A leader is defined by the qualities of the person and the player.  A leader has earned the respect of the players and the coaches and shows respect to the players, coaches and the club.  A leader is focused, confident, positive, inspires others and is composed under pressure.  More importantly, a leader is an experienced first team player that can guide less experienced players and support players in need.”

Falzon is tipping Mandurah, Armadale and Joondalup United to surprise the competition this year.

“From early indications demonstrated in the Night Series, they all have the potential to steal points from the top teams,” he said.

“But, I think the favourites to win the competition will be Bayswater. They have retained the majority of their squad from last year and they managed to sign a few more quality players.  I think they will be the team to beat this season.”

For Perth SC, consistency is key to mounting a serious challenge. “Currently we are focused on preparing ourselves in the best way possible for the first NPL match against Mandurah with the objective of winning the game. “

The match will take place at Dorrien Gardens on Saturday.
