Season Preview: Bayswater City

Football West News

Having taken out the QBE Night Series for a second consecutive year, it’s easy to see why many are tipping Bayswater to go far this season.

They were NPL winners in 2014 and 2015 before Perth SC bucked that trend to win the championship trophy in 2016.

Bayswater coach Chris Coyne believes his team dominated the competition at times last year but simply couldn’t find the net on several occasions.

“The key to our club having a good season will be scoring goals,” he said. “With the squad we have at our disposal this year we will be hard to breakdown but if we can turn the amount of possession we will have into goals we will be challenging this year.

“The whole 22-man squad will be key for us this season. It’s a team game and titles are won and lost with squads, not individuals, so we will aim to keep all of the boys fit and firing.”

Trent Kay will go into his fourth year as Bayswater captain.

“Instead of being too vocal, it’s the experience and calmness he brings that shows the players what is expected,” he said.

Coyne has no doubt that all clubs have recruited well this season, but is tipping Inglewood and ECU Joondalup as favourites for the competition.

“Both of those clubs have massive scoring potential and depth,” he said. “You finish above them, you win the league.

“I also think with Doug Hesketh at the helm for Mandurah they will surprise a few this year. He always has his teams well set up and tough to beat and the players give everything for him.”

Despite this, Coyne said his concentration will only be on his own team throughout the season.

“We want to win everything available, otherwise we should be playing social football. I will worry about my own team and let the rest get on with it.”

Bayswater will kick off their NPL Season on Sunday, February 19 in a clash against Inglewood United at Perth Plasterboard Centre Stadium.
