Floreat move to sixth after taking out Glory

Report by Peter Simcox

Floreat Athena moved to sixth spot on the PS4NPLWA table after a come-from-behind 4-2 win against Perth Glory at the E&D Litis Stadium on Tuesday evening, in their round nine catch up game.

Nikola Talimdzioski put the Glory youngsters in front early but Jonathan Stynes and skipper Ludovic Boi gave Floreat the lead at the break.

Then second half goals to Floreat’s Phil Arnold and Chris Saldaris wrapped up the points, before Talimdzioski scored his second and consolation goal late in the game.

Floreat coach Glen Grostate said it was a tough game and it was hard on the players, after playing a number of games in the last two weeks.

“We’ve had so many games recently, so credit to the boys to get the win, and it’s a massive three points for us tonight,” he said.

“The pitch was heavy and it took its toll on the legs but the lads, who were sore after a tough game against Inglewood on Saturday, put in a strong shift, so I’m proud of the boys effort tonight.”

Floreat defender Blair Govan said the game was a banana skin waiting to happen, but they got the job done.

“We’ve played four games in two weeks -against tough teams - so we’re just happy to get the three points,” he said.

“They (Glory) are good team and it’s a banana skin game for us, as they have beaten some good teams this season, so to get the win is great for us.”

Glory made the perfect start and they were ahead on four minutes.

Debutant midfielder Jack Leach sent Yacoub Mustafa racing down the right, his shot was saved by Jason Saldaris, but Talimdzioski fired home the rebound at the back post.

The home side hit back and were level ten minutes later. A long throw by Govan wasn’t dealt with by the Glory defence, and the ball fell to Jonathan Stynes who fired home from 5m.

The visitors almost hit the front again on 20 minutes. Gian Albano made a great run down the right and slipped the ball through to Joe Knowles, whose shot was well saved by Jason Saldaris.

That miss came back to haunt Glory as three minutes later Floreat went up.

A long ball was flicked on by Arnold, sending Boi racing clear, and he rounded Jordan Thurtell to roll the ball home.

Missed opportunities continued to hurt Glory. Daniel Stynes fired straight at Jason Saldaris, before Knowles went one-one with the Floreat custodian, but fired wide.

Floreat pressed late and Kris Gate looked set to score, but a great last ditch tackle from Dejan Spaseski denied him.

Both sides had early chances after the break. A mistake from Jason Saldaris let in Talimdzioski, but his shot from the angle crashed off a post.

Moments later Boi sent Jonathan Stynes in on goal, but Thurtell was out quickly to save at the midfielder’s feet.

The visitors were starting to get on top, but against the run of play Floreat added a third on 66 minutes.

Andrew Scaldaferro cross from the left found the unmarked Arnold, who side footed home.

Floreat added another six minutes later, Boi’s low cross from the right was turned home by Chris Saldaris.

To the Glory’s credit they continued to take the game to Floreat and scored a late consolation goal, Talimdzioski heading home Knowles’ free kick, but it was too little too late.
