Morgan heroics deny Subiaco late winner

Report by Ryan Langley

Sorrento goalkeeper James Morgan kept the scores locked at 1-1 as he denied Subiaco a last minute winner at Percy Doyle Reserve on Saturday.

James Morgan, who was happy with his personal performance, said his team could have worked better as a unit.

"We weren’t chasing for the game in the second half and I just think we need to slow down sometimes and go back to basics,” he said.

Scoring was underway for Sorrento in the 11th minute after a short-sharp pass from captain Daryl Platten found Alex Morgan at the top of the box who sent it into the back of the net with a huge left-foot strike.

Celebrations were short lived, however, when Subiaco’s Kevin White outpaced two Sorrento defenders and sent the ball home in the 19th minute.

Sorrento coach Jamie Harnwell was disappointed with the efforts of his team saying they controlled most of the game but couldn’t come away with three points.

“We created a lot of chances but didn’t take them this week,” Harnwell said.

“We are hopefully bringing in a couple of new players this week to start putting pressure on existing players.”

Sorrento kept control of the ball for majority of the second half, but Subiaco goalkeeper Ryan Montgomery wouldn’t give an inch.

A terrific save by James Morgan in the 86th minute denied White from finding the match winner.

Subiaco manager Mick Brazil said his team could have stolen the game at any point.

“A draw at this point in the season and being at the bottom of the ladder gives the boys a bit of belief,” he said.

“I’ve signed three players from the first division, two central midfielders and a full back and I hope they will make the difference.”

Both teams shared a piece of history as they celebrated the 120th anniversary of WA’s first official football matches.

Jamie Harnwell said he wants to see the game continue to grow in popularity while Mick Brazil hopes that the WA League takes on more teams for a larger league in the next few years.

Sorrento will take on Perth SC at Dorrien Gardens next week, while Subiaco will play at home against Armadale.
