Sorrento clinch victory in injury time

Report by Jayden Lihou

Substitute Todd Harnwell scored a late winner in Sorrento’s 1-0 victory of Armadale at Alfred Skeet Reserve on Saturday.

Harnwell replaced Billy Quinncroft in the 74th minute and scored a dramatic header deep into injury-time.

Sorrento coach Jamie Harnwell said his side’s second-half performance was the key to clinching all three points.

“In the first half both teams struggled to get grips with the difficult conditions,” he said.

“But in the second half we took the game to Armadale, pressed high and had a number of half chances.

“It would have been nice to do it earlier, but in the end it was a nice way to take a win.”

The victory moved Sorrento up to fifth on the ladder, just one place below Perth SC on goal difference.

Armadale came close to scoring in the first half when Ellis Healing’s long-range effort hit the cross-bar in the 35th minute.

Healing was involved in another chance 10 minutes into the second period when his corner found its way to teammate Anthony Skorich.

Skorich did well to volley the ball acrobatically, but his scissor-kick ended up just wide of a goalpost.

Armadale hit the woodwork again in the 71st minute when the wind caught Jake Sardelic’s wayward cross before sailing onto the bar.

Armadale had the chance to seal all three points in the 88th minute when Healing found himself in space.

However, a diving save from goalkeeper James Morgan was enough to deny Armadale a goal and ultimately a home win.

Despite failing to score, Armadale coach Paul Price felt his side deserved the victory.

“I thought we should have won the game, we were much the better side,” he said.

“I don’t think they created much and all they did was smash long balls the whole game.

“It was tough for us in the wind, but we hit the bar twice, and their keeper pulled off a really good save in the top corner.

However, I wouldn’t criticise the players for missing easy chances or anything like that.”

The loss leaves Armadale languishing in 11th on the ladder with just a win separating them from bottom-dwellers Subiaco.
