Season Preview: Armadale

Football West News

Having finished 11th in the 12-team PS4 NPL competition in 2016, Armadale were considered the underdogs going into the 2017 QBE Night Series third and fourth playoff against Sorrento.

But after scoring two goals in the first seven minutes of the game, heads were turned and their subsequent 2-1 win changed some predictions on how they will perform in 2017.

Coach John O’Reilly, at the helm for his first season, is excited by his team and a group of players who are eager to learn during every training session and game.

“The key to us having a good season will be our preparation and planning,” he said. “We have a well-rounded squad of hard workers who are willing to push their boundaries. By not having one key player we depend on, we are stronger as a team.”

Nathan Costello has been selected as Armadale captain again this year.

“He has great work ethic and is respected by his team mates.” O’Reilly said.

O’Reilly says Perth and Floreat are shaping as the most likely title winners, although he hopes his team can surprise a few people throughout the season.

“There are a couple of squads that have been put together this season that on paper should be favourites,” he said. “I'm hoping my rivals will be the teams chasing the top 4 spots.

O’Reilly has high expectations of his team.

“With the group of players we have this year, we would like to be in a challenging position for finals,” he said.

Armadale are gearing up to take on Perth Glory this Saturday at Alfred Skeet Reserve for the first round of the PS4 NPL WA season.
