Fremantle, Balcatta both hit five

Mikayla Lyons was back for Fremantle against Subiaco

Fremantle City catapulted themselves to third in the NPLWA – Women’s standings after a 5-1 win at Subiaco on Monday.

City started the weekend in fifth, but Perth's loss to Northern Redbacks and Hyundai NTC's draw at Murdoch University Melville mean they ended Round Nine a point clear of NTC and Balcatta, the latter winning 5-0 at Curtin University on Saturday.

Fremantle got off to a fine start at Rosalie Park when they took the lead on 13 minutes. Siobhan Longmore's cross from the left was met by Annabelle Leek, who netted for the first time since Round One.

Longmore then scored her first league goal of 2021 as she surged clear of Subiaco's defence and rounded the goalkeeper to finish for 2-0.

Dylan Davidson was denied by a brilliant challenge from Isabelle Bridger when released with a cross-field pass, but Subiaco would concede a third before the break when Clare Woods scored for a second successive game.

Cisco Jorquera's team came out firing in the second half, too, and scored a magnificent fourth as Leek passed inside, Georgie Ireland dummied, and Matilda Boyle curled brilliantly past Marissa Pidgeon from outside the area.

Subiaco stuck to their task and still had their moments as Davidson fired Samantha Narra's cutback over the bar. Fremantle eventually bagged a fifth, though, when the returning Mikayla Lyons fired across Pidgeon from inside the area with 10 minutes remaining.

An immediate consolation for the hosts followed when Ella Gillespie squared for Anna-Lena Dymowski to poke in, but it was Fremantle's evening as they set their sights on a clash with MUM FC on Friday.

On Saturday, Balcatta moved above Perth and temporarily into the top four when they won 5-0 at Curtin University.

A cagey opening was broken on 28 minutes when Giorgia Alford arrived at the back post to head in Ashleigh Panaia's corner.

That was Alford's first league goal of the season and three minutes later she made it 2-0, as her initial strike came back off the post and the midfielder poked in the rebound.

Scarlett Connelly and Eleanor Bates both tried their luck from range as Curtin attempted to pull one back before the break. But the Night Series winners managed to strike early in the second half and all but put the game to bed.

Balcatta played some lovely football down the left before releasing the pass for Cass Harvey to run in and score her third of the season.

Connolly had an effort saved by Gabby Dal Busco after being put through by Bates, but their search for a consolation came up short and instead Christi Astorp broke the offside trap to emphatically make it 4-0.

There was still time for a fifth as Lara Young pulled back for Amelia Andrew to net her first Balcatta goal since joining from Subiaco as Tim Cash's side now go unbeaten in three games.

On Friday night, Northern Redbacks came from behind to defeat Perth SC 2-1 at Macedonia Park.

Carlos Vega Mena's side now sit three points clear at the top of the league after MUM FC's 1-1 draw with NTC, while the Azzurri drop down to sixth after results elsewhere in Round Nine.
