Sorrento out to reel in City

Perth Glory have appointed NPL coach and head of academy Richard Garcia as head coach of their A-League side

The 2020 NPLWA Men’s title sprint continues today with Round Three of the second phase.

As leaders Cockburn City sit pretty after two wins from two, there are four teams tied on three points while Armadale need a win if they are to stay alive.

Sorrento are one of the sides in the bunch and they highlight perfectly the unpredictable start to the top six mini-league. Jamie Harnwell’s team pulled off a terrific win at Floreat Athena but then crashed 5-0 to Gwelup Croatia.

Today they welcome Cockburn to Percy Doyle Reserve, knowing victory will put them right back in the mix. However, a second successive home loss and Sorrento are six points off the top with just two rounds to play.

Floreat have yet to convince in the second phase, although they did bounce back from that setback against the Gulls to defeat ECU Joondalup 2-1 thanks to Robert Harding’s stoppage time header. If they are to go all the way they will feel three points at Armadale are a necessity. For Armadale it’s almost win or bust following heavy losses to ECU and Cockburn.

Gwelup’s thrashing of Sorrento in midweek showed they had moved on from their 3-2 defeat to Cockburn. Today’s home clash with ECU could be a shoot-out between in-form strikers Ndumba Makeche and Danny Hodgson, both of whom have scored hat-tricks in the past week.

Perth Glory this week moved up their NPL coach and head of academy Richard Garcia to become head coach of their A-League side.

Garcia will remain in charge of the NPL side until the end of the season and Glory are currently the only side in the bottom six of the split with maximum points. Today they will look to test a Bayswater City defence which was taken apart by Balcatta on Tuesday.

Few would have seen Balcatta’s 5-2 win coming considering their form in 2020. Today they host another side who picked up a midweek win in Inglewood United, who downed Perth SC 2-1.

Perth are favourites to get back to winning ways today against Rockingham City, who let in five against Glory on Wednesday.
