Top two meet in Men's NPL

Football West News

The top two clash in the NPLWA Men’s competition today with Gwelup Croatia and Floreat Athena going head to head at the Croatian Sporting Complex.

Just one goal separates the sides in the table, who both have three wins and a draw from the opening four rounds.

Leaders Floreat had little trouble getting past Rockingham City last time out, while a stoppage time header from Jon Stynes gave Gwelup a 3-2 victory at Armadale.

Perth Glory are in third, three points off the pace, after their impressive win over ECU Joondalup. Glory today are at Bayswater City, with Academy Technical Director Steven McGarry warning his young side to be wary of a backlash from Chris Coyne’s team, who are third from bottom.

McGarry told perthglory.com.au: “I think Bayswater will provide a different kind of challenge [from ECU] because they're a little bit more experienced and a bit of a wounded animal at the moment.

"Traditionally they're a big club and Coyney has done an unbelievable job there in terms of winning championships and is a top coach.”

Another of the traditional powers under pressure are Perth SC. Champions in three of the past four seasons, the Azzurri have a single point from the first four games and have only Rockingham below them. Inglewood United will be out to add to Perth’s situation at Perth Plasterboard Centre Stadium today.

Balcatta put in a solid display last week in beating Perth SC 3-1 last week. Today they are at Rockingham, who are conceding an average of almost five goals per game.

Cockburn City have picked up important points late on in the past two games, winning at Perth SC and drawing with Inglewood. That has helped them move to fourth in the table. Today they host Sorrento, whose striker Cameron Teece is the league’s top scorer with six goals following his opener in the win over Bayswater last week.

One goal behind Teece in the scoring chart is Armadale’s Angel Andres, who netted again last week against Gwelup. Armadale will consider themselves unlucky to have missed out on a point. They get the chance to make amends today at ECU Joondalup, who lost to Glory seven days ago.

All of today’s NPLWA Men’s games will be live streamed on the Football West YouTube and Facebook pages.
