Last weekend’s DT38 Round in the National Premier Leagues WA competition has been hailed a success in helping raise awareness of testicular cancer.

The whole of Round 13 was given over to highlight the work of the DT38 Australia charity and to honour the memory of late West Australian player Dylan Tombides, who died of the illness in 2014 aged just 20.

The traditional DT38 feature match was between Dylan’s two junior clubs, Perth SC and Stirling Lions, but banners and T-shirts were present at the five other NPL matches too.

DT38 Australia Media and Communications Manager Donna Giuffre was delighted with how the weekend went.

“The feedback we have received has been entirely positive and we are extremely grateful to everyone who helped out. The coverage we had in the build-up was unbelievable and thanks to everyone from Football West for making it possible and to the DT38 ambassadors and committee members who attended all of the matches,” she said.

“The Perth-Stirling game and the lunch were once again a major hit. Thanks very much to Gary and Luke (Perth SC president Gary Marocchi and Stirling president Luke Pavlos). Perth Glory goalkeeper Liam Reddy, who is one of our ambassadors, also lent his support and we auctioned a Glory shirt.

“But it was great to include all of the other clubs and next year we want to get more involved with them. While we may not have a lunch or dinner at every game, we would like to work more closely and go down and speak to the young players.

“We also want to remind them that there will be free scans coming up in August and the club which can get the most players to attend will win a prize. That is just a bit of fun but the message is deadly serious – getting checked could save a life.”

Donna said DT38 Round could even go national. “We’ll speak to the other States about DT38 and taking it there – testicular cancer does not just affect WA,” she said.

Football West Competitions Manager Trent Barron thanked all of the NPL clubs for buying into the DT38 Round.

“We really appreciate their co-operation and helping ensure it went so well with the awareness,” he said.

“But it doesn’t stop with one round of matches. The free scans are coming up in August which we will publicise and it would be great if as many players as possible take up the offer.”

On the pitch, the DT38 feature match went to form with unbeaten league leaders Perth SC beating bottom of the table Stirling 1-0.

The Lions deserve credit for pushing the Azzurri so close but they were unable to find a way back once Paul Zimarino struck from the edge of the box 19 minutes from time.

Perth are 10 points clear at the top with nine matches remaining after nearest rivals Floreat Athena crashed 4-1 at home to Bayswater City, who are now third.

At the bottom Stirling are four points adrift following ECU Joondalup’s 2-1 victory at Sorrento.
