Paul Zimarino scored a superb winner as Perth Soccer Club extended their unbeaten league run to 13 games in 2019 with a 1-0 win over Stirling Lions at Dorrien Gardens.

The win stretched Perth’s lead at the summit of the NPL WA to 10 points after Floreat were humbled at home by Bayswater, but they didn’t have it all their own way against a determined Stirling who put in a credible showing which belied their position at the foot of the table.

Both clubs came together for one of their own in DT38 Round, as the late Dylan Tombides was remembered by players, coaches and supporters at Dorrien Gardens.

Chances were few and far between in the first half in trying conditions, with Yagoub Mustafa and Dean Cummings trying their luck from distance but unable to test Francis Soale in Perth’s goal.

At the other end, Harley Orr came close to hooking the ball home after Kristian Santich’s set-piece, but both goalkeepers stayed quiet in a goalless opening period.

The tempo was lifted in the second half as Santich weaved his way into a pocket of space in the area and forced a good save from Ryan Montgomery.

Stirling’s rearguard continued to put in a heroic showing, but they couldn’t do anything about the goal which decided the game on 71 minutes.

After consecutive set-pieces, Andreas Theodosiades’ pass found its way to the edge of the area, where Zimarino rifled in a pile-driver that Montgomery couldn’t get a glove near.

Stirling pressed late on and nearly pinched an equaliser when substitute Michael Gama pounced on a loose ball but couldn’t quite bring it under control and scooped over the bar.

Time ran out for the visitors, who look ahead to a clash against Trevor Morgan’s former team Sorrento before potential relegation six-pointers against ECU Joondalup and Rockingham City.
