Round Three round-up

Perth SC went top of the NPL WA on Saturday after a rapid three-goal blitz blew away Rockingham City.

Michael Domfeh’s double inside the opening two minutes and Harley Orr’s penalty 10 minutes later left the league’s bottom club with a mountain to climb.

Rockingham at least ensured the result did not get embarrassing, despite Frank Furfaro’s effort near the end completing a 4-0 win for the Azzurri.

City coach Cam Lord said: “We just got punished, punished again. A 5-10 minute spell where it just simply wasn’t good enough and that was enough for Perth to win the game.”

Rockingham have a first home match of the NPL season this Saturday now that SafeRad Stadium is available. Lord will hope the familiar surroundings can help kickstart their campaign.

Previous leaders Armadale suffered an even heavier loss, going down 5-0 at home to Perth Glory who are second.

Gabriel Popovic, son of Glory’s A-League head coach Tony Popovic, scored twice while Henry Hore, Jacob Italiano and Nick Walsh got the others.

Result of the day came at E&D Litis Stadium where Inglewood United inflicted a first defeat in 12 league games on Floreat Athena.

Scott Blackmore won the match for Inglewood two minutes into added time with a classy chip from outside of the area, and coach Andrea Oliveira said: “I couldn’t believe it to be honest. He never shoots, so instead he tried a chip and it was wonderful.”

Balcatta also enjoyed a fantastic victory as they came from behind to down Bayswater City 2-1.

Skipper Trent Kay gave Bayswater the lead after the interval, only for Carmelo Giuffre to equalise 20 minutes from time and Gavin Knight score the winner from the penalty spot.

Kay acknowledged Bayswater did not deserve to win, while Balcatta coach Goran Stajic had a message for the rest of the league: “You want to come here and take us on, I’ll tell you what we are hard to beat at home.”

Cockburn City were on the right side of a stoppage-time equaliser this week after dropping two points seven days earlier. Trailing 1-0 to ECU Joondalup, Daniel Robinson popped up with the leveller deep into added time.

Stirling Lions have their first point after drawing 1-1 away to Sorrento and Ryan Montgomery praised the way his team reacted after conceding an early goal.

“Previous weeks we’ve conceded early and the heads have gone down. It’s good this week we bounced back,” the Lions keeper said.
