Floreat sign off with fifth straight win

Report by Max Hayden-Evans

Floreat Athena made it five straight wins as they rounded off the season with a 2-1 victory over Sorrento at E&D Litis Stadium on Saturday.

The victory extended their end-of-season unbeaten streak to nine while Sorrento suffered a first loss in seven game.

Floreat opened the scoring inside five minutes when Ludovic Boi finished past Sorrento goalkeeper Anastasis Farsaleas.

Floreat controlled the majority of the first half and would have been further ahead but for an astonishing double save by Farsaleas.

But three minutes before the interval Farsaleas was powerless to deny Floreat a second goal through Jesse Fuller.

After the break Floreat continued to threaten, only for Sorrento to set up a thrilling finale when Jordan Brown fired past Jason Saldaris on 73 minutes.

Floreat saw the game out, however, and coach Garrett McDuling hailed his side’s efforts and the way in which they ended their season.

“We’ve finished the season on a high note. Credit to Sorrento, they gave it to us. Both sides had their chances. The ball movement is faster now and there is a game plan and everyone has to know what they’re doing.”

“The confidence now is great to see. We all want to take this great club back to where it was. We all feel a part of this club now, and there is clear direction. Now it’s just about looking at depth and strengthening for next year. If they can continue with this form next season, there is no reason they can’t contend for the title.”

Sorrento coach Jamie Harnwell was also upbeat despite the loss as he reflected on the Gulls' late-season form.

“It was flat. Probably just one game too many for us in the end. But we’ve had a big six or eight weeks from where we were in relegation to get here. It’s hard to say what changed but we got one or two lucky results and the confidence just grew," he said.

“We’ve got a quality squad – we just all have to get better. From myself as head coach to the players. We want to continue to improve and this season hasn’t been good enough for a club like Sorrento.”
