Robinson scores four in Cockburn stroll

Daniel Robinson scored four goals as Cockburn City ran out 7-0 winners over Joondalup United in their Round 19 clash at Dalmatinac Park on Saturday afternoon.

Harry O’Brien, Anthony Skorich, and Luccas Mello also got in on the act for the third-placed Cockerels, while bottom of the ladder Joondalup United clearly struggled after Sam Wynne received a second yellow late in the first half.

Cockburn coach Scott Miller was pleased with his side’s attitude.

“Playing against the bottom team is always a banana skin but I felt we were professional and comfortable before they had a player sent off,” he said.

“We dominated a game that we should dominate, in past seasons we’ve probably struggled when we have been the favourites, this year we’ve kind of embraced that.

“People pencil you in for three points because Joondalup are at the bottom, but no one ever gives you the three points.”

The match began with Cockburn controlling possession and Joondalup looking to counter attack, and the visitors had the first big chance of the game. A looping cross wasn’t dealt with by goalkeeper Luke Radonich and gave Joondalup a great opportunity to score, but Wynne’s volley was mis-hit and off target.

Cockburn soon had a great opportunity themselves after some defensive mayhem. A Joondalup goalkick hit a defender in the back, allowing O’Brien to run in on goal, but despite being under no pressure he couldn’t find the net from close range.

O’Brien soon made up for his miss by opening the scoring for the home side. A volleyed effort was saved by United keeper James Bosdet, but O’Brien was on hand to finish from the rebound and put his side ahead.

Minutes later Robinson doubled the Cockerels' advantage, latching onto a great ball into the box and finding the back of the net.

Despite being two goals down Joondalup were still creating chances, but a second yellow for Wynne late in the half made their task even harder.

The second half was dominated by Cockburn who took advantage of their one-man advantage.

Their dominance paid off and they soon had a third goal courtesy of Skorich. A Cockburn corner found Mello on the edge of the box and he volleyed towards goal, but Skorich got the final touch past Bosdet.

Joondalup couldn’t deal with Cockburn’s pressure and conceded again within minutes, this time Robinson finishing after Bosdet saved the initial effort from O’Brien.

A controversial penalty decision piled on the misery for Joondalup, and Robinson converted to complete his hattrick and make it 5-0.

Late goals to Mello and Robinson rounded off a convincing 7-0 win for the Cockerels and moved them up into second on the ladder with seven rounds to play.

Joondalup coach Nick Jennings praised his side for sticking together throughout the match.

“We stayed together, even down to 10 men we worked our socks off and created chances,” he said.

“It would be easy for us to hide but not one person has hidden today, we stood up to be counted and lost to the better team.”

While Joondalup look consigned to relegation, Cockburn have a big clash with Perth SC next round as they challenge for the title.
