Armadale thump 'scared' Bayswater

Armadale put another dent in Bayswater's title hopes on Saturday as they defeated last year's NPL WA champions 4-1 at Alfred Skeet Reserve.

The defeat was Bayswater’s third in a row and saw them slump one point behind Cockburn City into third spot on the ladder.

 

And should league leaders Perth Glory defeat Floreat Athena on Sunday then Bayswater will be five points off the top with seven matches to play.

Armadale kept the visitors at bay for most of the first period and found themselves 2-0 up before the break with goals from Chris Jackson and captain Billy Quinncroft.

Two James Atkins goals either side of a Gian Albano penalty in the second half secured the win for Armadale who remain seventh.

Bayswater coach Chris Coyne expressed disappointment with his side in what he labelled an unacceptable performance.

“We played like we were scared today, which was the most disappointing thing for me,” he said.

“I don’t care if we lose, for me it’s not about the result, it’s about the performance and not playing with fear.

“The players have to be held accountable now, it’s now time for them to stand up and make sure they’re doing everything they can to win games and at the moment they’re just not doing that.”

Bayswater actually began the game the more positive and fashioned a chance to score in the 15th minute when Albano received the ball in the box.

The forward unleashed a shot at the near post which was kept out thanks to a quick reaction save from keeper Devon Spence.

 

Four minutes later Armadale took the lead after Jackson capitalised on a mix-up in the Bayswater defence and looped a header into the back of the net.

The home side then doubled the lead when Quinncroft volleyed home after he was first to the ball following a scramble in the box.

Charlie Kenna had a golden opportunity to make it 3-0 in the 56th minute after Jackson found him in space in the box, however the midfielder skied his first-time effort over an empty net.

The Army did not have to wait long to get their third, however, as five minutes later Atkins was allowed space to dribble into the box before finishing in the bottom corner.

Bayswater pulled one back after Albano was fouled by the keeper and the forward converted the penalty himself.

But the result was put beyond doubt in the 72nd minute when Jackson switched the ball to find Atkins in the box and he showed composure to make it 4-1.

Armadale coach John O’Reilly praised his side’s performance and finishing but revealed he already has his mind set on upcoming cup fixtures.

“In this fixture last year they thumped us 5-0 so today’s result shows we’ve come a long way and that the team is has a bit more ambition and a bit more quality,” he said.

“There’s still only five points between us and second bottom so I think a couple more wins will make it safe for us this year.

“Obviously we have a few other things on our mind, with the (Belt up.) cup final and the (FFA Cup) Round of 32, so we would like to put some of our upcoming games to bed so we can go to Cairns not worrying about a relegation battle.”
