Solid Subiaco hold Forrestfield

Report by Ryan Borrett

The points were shared at Wildlife Safari Stadium on Wednesday night as Forrestfield United and Subiaco were unable to find a goal in Round 11 of the National Premier Leagues WA.

Forrestfield failed to replicate their scoring form from the weekend when they put six past ECU Joondalup. Instead they could not breach a solid Subiaco backline despite creating several decent chances.

United coach Rod Banjar agreed his side wasted their chances in front of goal and highlighted the efforts of Subiaco goalkeeper and captain Ryan Montgomery.

“It just didn’t want to go in tonight. That’s the way it is. You don’t put the chances away, then you don’t get goals,” he said.

“Credit to their keeper, he made some fantastic saves.

“We still played constructively and kept a clean sheet, which is a massive positive.”

Neither side asserted control in the first half although both grew into the game as the match wore on.

Forrestfield’s best chance of the first half came from a corner just before the break but Tom Southgate’s header edged just past the far post.

Subiaco’s best effort of the opening period came a few minutes later when winger Moase Abendelwa found space on the edge of the box and drove home a low shot but it was well saved by Forrestfield’s Luke Martino.

Subiaco player-coach Ian McMurray struck a similar chord to Banjac but still took some positives from the match.

“The thing that let us down was in the final third, that final ball just wasn’t there for us,” he said.

“I’m still happy with the performance, it just didn’t go our way.”

Both teams sprung into life in the second half and the three points were there for the taking.

Forrestfield striker Hasani Sinclair came extremely close to opening the scoring as he broke into space on the counter but was blocked just before he got his shot away.

Forrestfield sent extra men forward in the dying minutes in search of a winner and almost found one through Callum Dobbs but his powerful long shot was just tipped over by Montgomery.

Both sides will hope to find their goalscoring form on the weekend as Forrestfield take on leaders Bayswater City, while Subiaco play Floreat Athena.
