In-form Perth too good for Subiaco

Report by Navrin Secker

Perth SC moved to second on the NPL WA ladder with a 3-0 defeat of Subiaco at Dorrien Gardens on Saturday night.

Ramon Falzon’s side trail leaders Bayswater on goal difference only after Gustavo Catarcione, Niccolo Sabatini and Richard Howles gave the Sky Blues a fourth successive league win.

“Our aim for today was becoming consistent, putting in another good performance and getting that clean sheet we have been missing this year,” Perth coach Falzon said.

“Subi have improved a lot and we have always struggled to beat them … I’m very happy that for once we have got a comfortable win against Subi.”

From the start of this Round Five match Perth looked to maintain possession and Paul Zimarino soon went close when he forced a save from Subiaco keeper Teophile Brown.

Brown had been handed a rare start with Subiaco captain Ryan Montgomery unavailable but his side were struggling to keep hold of the ball.

In contrast, Perth continued to dominate and they were rewarded in the 16th minute when Catarcione struck after controlling a cross before finishing.

Subiaco managed to carve out a chance of their own but Rory Feely was unable to finish. That miss proved doubly costly on 25 minutes as Perth doubled their lead through Sabatini, who evaded two defenders then fired through Brown’s legs.

Subiaco finally settled after the goal and it needed a fine reflex save from Perth keeper Francis Soale to keep the away side goalless at half-time.

Asher Nelson had Subiaco’s next chance but his header was wide of the target and again they were punished when a poor clearance from Brown allowed Howles to make it 3-0.

Subiaco team manager Dave Hebble said his side didn't keep hold of the ball well enough.

“We’re just a little bit disappointed, the boys have been playing quite well so we thought that we would try and hold them,” he said.

“Our main objective wasn’t to cough the ball up, which we did an awful lot of. We wanted to go out, keep the possession, try and frustrate them and try to counter which didn’t work.”
