Nine-man Armadale too strong for Joondalup United

Report by Damian Piek

Armadale SC coach John O’Reilly has praised the efforts of his players in their first-round NPLWA victory over Joondalup United.

Despite losing two men through red cards, Armadale took home a 3-0 victory over United.

O’Reilly thought Armadale dominated in the later stages of the match.

“The first half was a bit scrappy,” he said.

“But early in the second half we saw a few opportunities that we could exploit and we scored so overall I think we did well.”

The first half of the match was a tight affair with United piling on the pressure in the opening stages, but Armadale keeper Sam Hutchings kept his side in the game with a number of saves.

Armadale started the second half with a bang that led to a mistake in defence by United, with Chris Jackson flying past two defenders and finding the net.

In the 65th minute Armadale scored their second goal through Michael Rizidies who followed up a shot on target by Jackson to double his side’s advantage.

Minutes later, Armadale’s Billy Quinncroft easily slotted the ball into the back of the net making it 3-0.

Quinncroft was sent off in the 75th minute with a red card, leaving his side to defend their lead with 10 men.

Things went from bad to worse for Armadale, with Jackson sent off in the 83rd minute with another red.

Armadale’s defence held strong and they managed to keep the clean sheet.

United coach Nick Jennings was disappointed in his side’s performance.

”It came down to our defensive errors in the final third and not capitalising on our opportunities in the attacking third,” he said.
