Season Preview: Perth Glory

Football West News

Perth Glory coach John Gibson is excited for a challenge when his side kicks off their 2018 campaign, after an inconsistent 2017 season left them feeling determined.

“Our NPL program is constantly evolving and improving and we look to being super competitive,” he said.

“The young group has been together for a while and our roster remains relatively unchanged. We have strong belief and are excited for the upcoming NPLWA season.”

Gibson noted a number of strong sides in the league, but believes his young squad are tight-knit and focussed on improving their game.

“Every season you are faced with a fierce competition that is always improving and any team can beat anyone on their day," he said.

"To pick a favourite would be difficult as the evenness of the competition is balanced however there maybe a few surprises."

“We are looking to be super competitive with a process-driven approach displaying a tough, aggressive, positive mentality.”

It’s been a busy pre-season for the youngsters with the switch from the Y-League, but Gibson said they finished their Conference games well.

“Our pre-season has been a short transition from the Foxtel Y-League to the NPLWA Season, but the group closed the Foxtel Y-League in good form finishing undefeated for the last four rounds,” he explained.

“The group has just completed a well-earned week off before now re-focusing for the demands of the tough NPLWA season. We have played a few trial games against NPLWA opposition where we now have to adjust to a new competition and the challenges it presents.”

The Glory squad is bristling with talented youngsters, with a number making their Hyundai A-League debuts this season. Gibson said they all bring something to the team and it bodes well for 2018.

“The whole group is young, and we’re looking forward to exposing more youngsters to opportunities in senior football,” he said.

“We are not relying on any individual but expecting the entire group to display maturity and leadership qualities, and they are all looking forward to the opening game of the season.”

Perth Glory will make the trip to Dorrien Gardens to take on Perth SC in their NPLWA opener on Sunday, February 25, 7.00pm kick-off.
