Subiaco emerged from a second-half goal frenzy to score a 5-3 PS4 NPLWA victory over Joondalup United at Rosalie Park on Saturday.

The sides were locked at 1-1 in a tight opening 45 minutes before the floodgates opened in a pulsating second half.

Subiaco player-manager Ian McMurray said he was delighted with how his side performed.

“We were very disappointed with our performance last week, so I asked for a reaction and got it today,” he said.

“I said to them at half time that I know we’ve got more to give and we came out and scored some good goals.

“Staying in the NPL is very important to us, but we want to do it the right way. We want to play a bit of football and I thought today we went about our business very well.”

Subiaco came out of the blocks early and were nearly ahead inside three minutes, when David Perich’s close-range effort forced a great save from James Bosdet.

Bosdet was on song again minutes later, reacting well to stop Alex Randell’s corner from going directly in.

There was little Bosdet could do in the 12th minute, though, when Jordan Candlish received a return pass from Asher Nelson and drilled home to open the scoring.

The visitors sprung into life after conceding and found their equaliser 10 minutes later.

Alex Wild surged down the right and played the ball across goal to Richard Howles, who took a touch before firing home through a crowded penalty area.

It stayed at 1-1 until the break, despite chances for both teams to go ahead, and that continued into an exciting second half.

Within minutes of the restart Subiaco won a penalty, which Randell promptly dispatched to give his side the lead.

Two minutes later, Nathan Smith got on the end of Perich’s through ball and nutmegged the advancing Bosdet to make it 3-1.

Joondalup pulled one back immediately and Wild was again the provider; this time playing in Guy McDonald, who fired home to reduce the deficit.

Despite conceding, Subiaco wrestled the momentum back and regained their two-goal advantage in the 63rd minute.

Stefan Hill headed Randell’s free kick towards goal and Nathan Diaz swooped with what appeared to be a final touch, although the officials awarded the goal to Hill.

Perich scored Subiaco’s fifth on 75 minutes after substitute Carlin Feely picked him out following another Bosdet save.

The visitors scored a consolation goal with 10 minutes to play when Rowdy Yates’ curling free kick skimmed the head of a covering Diaz on its way into the net.

Joondalup United coach Nick Jennings said his side weren’t committed enough on the day and didn’t match Subiaco’s intensity.

“We didn’t show up at all today, from the first minute to the last, we were never at the races,” he said.

"I challenged the boys to win as many of the last ten as we could, but today we were beaten fair and square.”
