Howles leads Joondalup to Glory

Report by Callum George

Four goals from striker Richard Howles has seen Joondalup United claim all three points in their round 3 catch up match against Perth Glory.

United were the quicker of the two sides off the mark, with Howles forcing a save out of young keeper Jackson Lee within just five minutes.

He continued to cause headaches early on for the Glory youngsters as just moments later he got on the end of a Matthew Sparrow free kick but was once again denied by Lee.

The Glory had a chance of their own early on as captain Daniel Stynes capitalised on a clumsy mistake from the United defence before slipping a pass into Knowles inside the box who had his shot parried wide by James Bosdet.

The rest of the first half mellowed out into an even contest, with neither side really able to assert their dominance on the game.

The hosts started the second half brightly with Stynes playing through a fantastic ball for Bayley Brown-Montgomery who was left one on one with James Bosdet. The Joondalup custodian was quick off his line and produced a fine save to deny the young Glory forward.

That miss would come back to haunt the Glory as just minutes later Joondalup opened the scoring. Fullback Rowdy Yates curled in a delightful set-piece from the right  wing, picking out Howles who headed it home into the bottom left corner.

The goal appeared to give Joondalup momentum, and it wasn’t long before the visitors doubled their lead.

A poor back pass from defender Cameron McMurray gifted Howles his second as he rounded the keeper and tucked it home from an acute angle.

Two minutes later he scored himself a hat-trick, getting on the end of a well worked attack from United and tapping it home from inside the six yard box.

Three didn’t appear to be enough for Howles, as he got on the end of a brilliant cross from Stocker and rifled a header home past a helpless Jackson Lee.

The Glory put up a late fight with Stynes and Joseph Knowles finding the back of the net, but the damage was done as Joondalup ran out comfortable winners.
