Better late than never as Cockburn City beat Bayswater

Report by Tristan Wheeler

An 89th-minute goal from Cockburn City defender Joshua Kuser sank Bayswater City in a closely fought encounter at Dalmatinac Park on Saturday Night.

Kuser’s classy backheeled goal proved the difference, condemning his former side to a 2-1 defeat.

On a different night, the match might have ended in a draw, as both sides enjoyed periods of momentum. Bayswater coach Chris Coyne acknowledged his side had been disappointing in the first half.

“The first half for me was just drab," Coyne said. "Cockburn were very good, no disrespect, but we were poor."

Cockburn City coach Scott Miller said his side had adapted after struggling for possession in the opening exchanges.

The home side took the lead in the 14th minute when Gian Albano continued his fine start to the season when he finished through the legs of goalkeeper Devon Spence to register his third goal of the new campaign.

Bayswater's David Heagney began to exert his influence on the match in the 36th minute, switching the ball to winger Jason Micro and then narrowly heading over from the winger's return cross.

Cockburn earned themselves a promising free kick in the 45th minute, but Spence produced a save to deny Jesse Lazzaro.

The match sprang to life in the second half with Heagney flicking a header over the bar just three minutes after the restart.

Heagney continued to stamp his authority on the match with an exchange with Jason Micro, whose cross was headed over by Bor Bor Sam in the 50th minute.

After a quiet half, Bayswater winger Sam began to exert his influence on the game, drawing a spilled save from Cockburn keeper Luke Radonich.

At the other end, a promising free kick from Cockburn City’s Calvin Whitney flew just over the bar in the 56th minute.

After a period of sustained pressure, Bayswater finally equalised in the 65th minute through a fantastic individual goal from Sam.

Bayswater continued to pile on the pressure and Heagney forced another save from a header in the 73rd minute  before Whitney fired back, forcing Spence to save five minutes later.

But Kuser had the final say with a dramatic winner that lifted Cockburn to third place on the table.
