Substitute Gustavo Giron Marulanda scored four second half goals as defending champions Bayswater City kicked off their PS4 National Premier Leagues WA season with a thrilling 4-3 win over Perth Glory.

Glory led 2-0 at the break after a terrific first half performance of their own, and led 3-1 mid way through the second half, as they looked set to inflict a first league defeat on City since 2014.

But last season’s golden boot winner twice kept his cool from the spot before curling home brilliantly from 20m to complete a staggering comeback.

The Colombian striker, who has started the last two games on the bench after a combination of injury and illness, was delighted to come on and make an impact.

“It’s never nice to sit on the bench but I was lucky enough to come on and score the penalties and the free-kick. It was a really good day for me,” he said.

“I can’t figure out what happened out there. We started off a bit sloppy today, but we showed great character.

“We’ll take the three points but there’s a lot to work on. We’re far from being at our best.”

The Glory started with enthusiasm and looked a lot sharper than Bayswater in the earlier stages as the pace of Nic Talimdzioski and Daniel Stynes provided a real threat.

They led deservedly on 11 minutes when Talimdzioski scored superbly with his head after good work from Gian Albano down the right flank.

Stynes could have made it 2-0 on the half-hour mark, nicking the ball off the toes of Trent Kay before blasting over the bar.

A second did arrive in first half stoppage time, though, just as Bayswater were getting a footing in the game.

Albano started the move at right back, driving forward with pace and exchanging passes with Talimdzioski before sliding the ball past Devon Spence in the area.

City came out with a lot more intent after the break and were awarded a penalty when Ross Millard tangled with Marulanda in the area.

The striker netted at the second attempt after Jordan Thurtell’s initial save, before Millard received a second yellow moments later for what looked to be dissent.

That didn’t dent Glory’s confidence, though, and they went 3-1 ahead on 66 minutes when the ball broke to the impressive Talimdzioski and he fired precisely across Spence into the far corner.

Bayswater were then awarded a second penalty eight minutes later after Thurtell pulled down Alex Wild before remarkably being given a third spot-kick soon after when Wild cut across his marker.

Marulanda emphatically finished both to complete his hat trick before bagging a magnificent fourth, curling a dead-ball over the wall and beyond the reach of Thurtell.

Glory would end the game with nine men when Cal Whitney was shown red for an off-the-ball incident with Marulanda following the goal as Bayswater resisted in the final 10 minutes to close out victory.

Bayswater coach Chris Coyne had mixed emotions following the dramatic comeback.

“We’re grateful we used the ‘get out of jail card’ today but credit to the boys, sometimes you’ve got to roll up your sleeves and have a go,” he said.

“They’re a tired bunch that worked really hard today. We were fortunate to get away with the three points but we’ll take it.”
