Lions roar into semi-finals

Stirling Lions wrapped up a place in the QBE Night Series semi-finals with a 3-1 win over ECU Joondalup at the weekend.

Steve Purton had given Stirling the lead after just two minutes but Tommy Amphlett had ECU level 16 minutes later.

Robert Petkov’s fourth Night Series goal edged Stirling ahead in the 26th minute and David Micevski completed the scoring in the second half.

The result meant Stirling maintained their 100 percent record from four matches in Pool B and ended Joondalup’s hopes of progressing to the knockout stages.

Alex Salmon scored a hat-trick, including two penalties, as Armadale kept alive their Night Series campaign with a 3-2 win over Balcatta, whose goals were scored by Conor Kavanagh.

Perth SC rallied after conceding an early goal to Jason Mirco to claim a 2-1 win over Sorrento thanks to goals from Reece Vittiglia and Harley Orr.

Second-placed Perth can confirm their place in the semi-finals when they take on Balcatta in their last pool game on Saturday. Should Perth lose, Armadale and Sorrento could sneak into the semi-finals by winning their final pool games against Stirling and ECU Joondalup, respectively.

Brian Woodall maintained his record of scoring in every Night Series game with the opener in Inglewood United’s 3-1 victory over Subiaco. Aleks Jovic and Jason Barrera were also on target for Inglewood, while Rory Feely scored for Subiaco.

Goals from Gustavo Giron Marulanda, Trent Kay and David Heagney helped Bayswater City to a 3-1 win over Floreat, who had Jon Stynes to thank for their early opener.

Angel Andres and Reuben Tristao were on target for Cockburn City in a 2-2 draw with Perth Glory, whose goals were scored by Joe Knowles.

NOTE: Two matches scheduled for Friday, February 26, at Dalmatinac Park will now be played on Saturday, February 27. Kick-off times have also changed.
