Bayswater want unbeaten season

The PS4 NPLWA title is in the bag but Bayswater City defender Trent Kay insists there will be plenty at stake when his side takes on second-placed Floreat Athena at E&D Litis Stadium on Sunday.

Bayswater wrapped up top spot last weekend with an emphatic 4-1 win over Perth Glory, while Floreat’s already slim hopes of winning the title evaporated in a 5-2 defeat to Perth SC at Dorrien Gardens.

But a third successive Bayswater title has not satisfied City’s appetite for more success as the club aims to finish the season unbeaten.

“A few years back Floreat were undefeated and we want to do the same thing,” said Kay after playing for WA in Wednesday night’s 1-0 loss to Perth Glory. “We’re all about breaking records at Bayswater, so we’ll definitely be looking to get one over them.”

Floreat clinched top spot in 2007 with 18 wins, four draws and no losses. Bayswater have won all but one of their 19 matches - they drew with Inglewood United - with three games to play.

In 1990, Athena finished top of the table with a record that would have been perfect but for a solitary draw, although they played just 18 matches.

Aside from gunning for history, Bayswater are also aiming to continue momentum into the NPL National Finals Series.

They will kick-off their campaign away to West Adelaide on September 20, aiming to improve on last year’s performance when they exited the competition at the first hurdle against eventual winners MetroStars.

“It was disappointing last year and we definitely want to at least go one step further or even win the competition this time,”Kay said.

“Momentum is definitely the key to achieving that and the boys want to win the rest of the games this season.”

Despite the disappointment of defeat last week, Floreat will have something to prove on Sunday, according to Athena defender Aryn Williams.

“All we’re playing for now is pride and we won’t go out there and roll over,” Williams said.

“We’ve got to go out there and show everyone we’re just as good as Bayswater.”
