Ruthless RedStar maintain perfect start

Report by Tommy Doleman

Perth RedStar head coach Carlos Vega Mena has led his side to four straight wins at the start of the 2022 season

Perth RedStar maintained their 100% start to the 2022 NPLWA - Women's competition as they recorded a crushing 9-0 win over Subiaco at RedStar Arena.

Sarah Carroll scored a hat trick and Larissa Walsh netted twice in the resounding victory, as RedStar moved five points clear of the rest courtesy of this result and a goalless draw in Sunday's other game between Fremantle City and Perth SC.

The hosts simply blew Subiaco away four goals inside the first 18 minutes. Grace Monteiro scored a brilliant first senior goal for the club from outside the box, before a flowing team move ended with a one-two between Jay Coleman and Walsh and the latter scoring for 2-0.

Andreia Teixeira then scored a goal of the season contender as her strike from just inside the Subiaco half caught Zara Board off her line. Soon after Carroll bagged her first when picked out by Walsh.

Carroll was on the scoresheet again before half-time with an emphatic finish following another nice passing sequence to make it 5-0 at the break.

Walsh rounded the goalkeeper to score early in the second period, before a rare Subiaco attack as Phoenix Browlie forced home goalkeeper Shivagni Battaglia into a smart save low to her right.

But RedStar were relentless and continued to career away to record their biggest win in the NPLW era. Olivia Wood made it seven after tapping in Renee Leota's cross and Carroll's penalty completed her treble and made it eight.

The last word was left to Leota, who collected Walsh's pass to calmly slot in for 9-0 as RedStar's imperious form continued.

At Hilton Park, Fremantle and Perth played out a goalless draw in a result which helped neither team in their pursuit of the leaders.

Jamie-Lee Gale planted an early effort wide of the post for City, but the closest either team came to scoring in the first half was when Perth’s Ella Lincoln unleashed from outside the box and Dayle Schroeder tipped over the bar.

After the interval, Abbey Meakins' free-kick was straight at the Fremantle goalkeeper, then Lincoln’s strike was fumbled by Schroeder who gratefully gathered amid a goalmouth scramble.

Gale's late solo run almost yielded a City chance but neither side did quite enough and the match ended 0-0.

The Friday night fixture between Curtin University and Murdoch University Melville and Sunday's clash between Hyundai NTC and Balcatta Etna were postponed due to Covid.

Results

Round Four: Fremantle City 0-0 Perth SC, Perth RedStar 9-0 Subiaco. Postponed: Curtin University v MUM FC and Hyundai NTC v Balcatta Etna.
