AFL South East is pleased to announce the appointment of Roger Hampson as Chairman, replacing Jeff Kimber who stood down from the role at the Commission’s AGM held on December 9.
Recently stepping down from his position as Chairman of the South East Juniors, Roger brings a wealth of senior executive experience to the South East Commission. Roger held positions as Chief Executive Officer of the Essendon Football Club (1988-1996), Tasmanian Football League (1996-1998), the Melbourne Tigers (1998-1999) and the Victorian Canine Association. His tenure within these positions have often been through particularly turbulent times in sports administration and he is currently a teacher at St Peter’s College in Cranbourne.
Roger was appointed Chairman of the AFL Victoria DDJFL Working Party in 2009, overseeing the transition into what is now the South East Juniors. He remained Chair of the league following on from that complex transition - a transition that now sees the league as one of the most respected, professional managed community sporting organisations.
In accepting the position, Roger stated that the opportunity to provide the strategic direction for the sport in the region was an attractive proposition. “For the last 5 years we have been focused on the stability, development and growth of the South East Juniors. The opportunity to lead a team focused on the collective interests of the sport across the largest, most diverse and fastest growing regions in Victoria was a challenge that resonated with me.” Mr Hampson said. “I look forward to focusing on the objectives of the Commission’s recently released strategic plan and working with all stakeholders for the betterment of football in the region.”
Roger will officially assume his post at the Commission’s first meeting in January and will be joined by two new Commissioners in Ted Turner and Paddy McKenna. Ted and Paddy were elected to commission positions followed the expansion of the Commission Board from 5 to 7 members at the AGM and both have an extensive history of playing, coaching and administrative involvement in football at all levels.
AFL South East would like to acknowledge the contribution of Jeff Kimber as the inaugural Chairman of the Commission. Jeff has led AFL South East through what is always a complex start-up phase and driven many new initiatives, the benefits of which will be seen in years to come.
