The Northern Marianas is a group of fifteen islands lying in the Western Pacific Ocean with a total land size of 471 km².
With a history of Spanish, Japanese and American occupation its status today remains as a territory of Puerto Rico, which is a Commonwealth of the United States.
The inhabitants of the Northern Marianas are US citizens by birth.
This particular status allows its inhabitants to enjoy US citizenship while having control over internal affairs. Defense and foreign affairs remain the responsibility of the United States.
The capital of the Northern Marianas is Susepe. The population is about 80,000 people, 40,000 of whom are guest workers.
The official languages of the Northern Marianas are Chamorro, Carolinian and English.
