Nauru is the world’s smallest island nation and is formerly known as Pleasant Island.
With a land mass of only 22 km² it is the only republican state in the world without an official capital.
Nauru was originally inhabited by Micronesian and Polynesian people 3000 years ago. In the late 19th century, Nauru was legally incorporated into Germany and became a mandate territory administered by New Zealand, Australia and the United Kingdom.
During World War II, Nauru was occupied by Japan.
In 1968 Nauru achieved independence and joined the Commonwealth as a special member becoming a full member in 2000.
Nauru is compromised predominantly of Naurans, followed by Pacific Islanders, Chinese and Europeans.
The Naurans are descended from Polynesian and Micronesian people who believed in the female deity Eijebong and a spirit land, an island called Buitani.
The official languages spoken by the population of 13, 048 are Nauruan with English the language of government and commerce.
The main religion in the island is Christianity.
Nauru is a phosphate rock island and consequently Nauru’s economy relies strongly on the export of phosphate deposits.
