American Samoa is located east of Samoa. It is a  territory of the United States. The capital of American Samoa is Pago Pago.
American Samoa was settled as early as 1000 BC possibl from Indonesia, Vanuatu, Fiji and Tonga. 
European explorers eventually made their way to its shores in the 18th century. By the late 19th century the Samoan archipelago was divided by a treaty in 1899 between the two occupying powers in the area, Germany and the United States.
In 1900 the United States gained control of the area that is now known as American Samoa.
American Samoa has a population of approximately 58,000 people with native Pacific Islanders making up 93% of the population. 
The five islands occupy an area of 199 square kilometers, roughly half way between Hawaii and New Zealand.
Languages spoken in American Samoa are Samoan and English.
Christianity, including Catholicism and Protestantism, is the main religion.
The people of American Samoa are American nationals, but are not American citizens.  American Samoans can travel and work freely in the US, but cannot vote in Federal elections.
