The AFL has long provided Sunshine Coast boys with opportunities through Auskick and school and club competitions, but this year the girls have stepped up for some recognition.
Eight schools from across the Coast formed a girls’ competition, and many of the participants have proved extremely passionate about the game.
Siena Catholic College Year 8 student Sophie Midgley has been playing Australian football for three years through a school competition and Auskick.
Sophie plays touch football and surfs as well as taking on the boys on the AFL field and says she can not wait for the new girls-only competition to get started.
“It’s getting bigger; heaps of girls on the Sunshine Coast play. This competition is meant to be pretty big with heaps of teams,” she said.
Siena teacher Peter Crisp said more girls wanted to play football and the AFL was looking at having a weekend or after-school competition (next year).
The Siena Year 8 girls, who have lost only one game this year, face Mountain Creek today at Fisherman’s Rd for the chance to make the grand final.
AFL Queensland Sunshine Coast have identified through their regional priorities planning great opportunity to develop youth girls football with the hope of working with the AFL Sunshine Coast Juniors to develop a competition structure that would cater for girls of 12-15 years of age.
