Following his success in the Lidgett Cup last weekend in the Intermediate fleet, Hugo decided to enter the Open fleet in this weekend's Schnapper Point Regatta. He thought he would be more challenged which would train him better for the State titles in 2 weeks. Both fleets were starting together which made starts more interesting – 27 optimists in total.
He was very pleased with his first race where he finished 6th, just behind the top Victorian sailors (all members of the Vic or Oz team).
Race 2 and 3 on Saturday were a little bit more challenging as the sea breeze picked up. Nevertheless, he managed to be 8th overall after 3 races.
Sunday was a different day and not very successful…
2 races were sailed in 0-5 knots. Very slow races where sailors had to be persistent and concentrate all the way. This was not the case for Hugo… In both races he did not manage to start well and struggled in the back of the fleet.
This did not help the overall ranking where he finished 12th, just behind his friend Jeremy Gray from WYC and 2 in front of his training partner from Somers, Daniel Laverty.
After having raced most weekend since end of January, Hugo will have a break next weekend to “recharge his batteries” before the state titles during the long weekend.
