The 47th Marlay Point Over Night Race for trailerable yachts was conducted by Lake Wellington Yacht Club on Gippsland Lakes this weekend. 107 yachts competed, initially for a space at the lagoon to moor overnight, then to launch at the dual lane boat ramp, before everyone then converged on the starboard end of the start line.
Starting at 1945 in time for a spectacular Gippsland sunset, the race goes from Marlay Point on Lake Wellington to Paynesville on Lake Victoria through the usually pretty tricky McLennan Straits. Rumours of a number of boats using oars to row in the Straits while floating along to Holland's Landing during a lengthy lull in the wind are rife this year, as are sightings of at least three boats stealth racing without navigation lights. However, everyone safely finished, most before dawn, happy with the steady 10-12 knot breeze that filled in at the end of the Straits.
Inspiration, an Ultimate 23, proudly flew the WYC burgee, and finished 14th on handicap in Division A. Information about the MPONR can be found at lakewellingtonyachtclub.org or via facebook.
