While many were sleeping and relaxing over the long weekend, Lucy Gray, Jeremy Gray, Hugo Vandame and Daniel Laverty (from Somers) competed in the Victorian Optimist State Championships at Sandringham Yacht Club.
The weather was very tricky. On Saturday we had light winds with lots of chop. It was difficult to maintain speed through the chopping waves, especially for larger sailors. Sunday brought slightly more wind but with that more choppy waves as well. The wind kicked in on Monday afternoon. We also had a great amount of swell. The larger sailors must have been pleased but it was getting tricky for the smaller sailors. Everyone tried their hardest and between the 4 of us we all got some good results.
Hugo and Daniel raced in 8 races in intermediate fleet. There were 38 competitors. Overall Hugo placed 18th and Daniel 24th.
Lucy and Jeremy raced in 9 races over the three days in open fleet. There were 14 interstate competitors on top of the 35 Victorians and the competion was very tough. Overall Jeremy placed 32nd and Lucy 20th. This puts Lucy in the top 10 in Victoria and 3rd girl.
It was a great regatta. We all raced well, learnt something and had lots of fun. We hope to see more western port sailors at the opti states next year.
