The 2016 Taipan State Titles were held at Altona Yacht Club
Enteries were good
- 17 x 4.9 Cat Rig
- 7 x 4.9 Sloop Rig
- 7 x 5.7
Nic Jurovic and I sailed in the 4.9 Sloop Class
Conditions varied over the weekend from floaters to 20+ knots
7 Races were run
2 on Saturday afternoon; Light breezes, we got a 6th and a DNF (broke a fitting on the mast)
3 races on Sunday, the first in a very light breeze - we got 3rd (no one was more surprised than me). The breeze built up to 10 >15knts in the afternoon we got 2 x 6ths - missed 5th in one by half a boat length.
2 Races on Sunday 18+ knts; We were safe in 6th place but cartwheeled 20m from the finish line! Nic bashed his shin on the bow of the boat. By the 7th race the wind was quite strong and we were struggling!
We ended up 6th overall - Gives us something to improve on next year.
The Taipan sailors and Association again proved to be a great group, friendly and accepting. Nic found it easy to chat to any one who happen to pass through the showers during his quick 3/4 hour stint!!! (OK I’m exaggerating - half an hour)
Altona surprised me, its a great place to sail. Facilities are old, a bit ramshackle but well loved. A small group of volunteers did a very efficient job of delivering a good event. Does this sound familiar?
All in all a great event, nearly as good as last years WYC event!
