With the breeze building, a strong wind warning current and the rescue boat engaged in a possible rescue of the Vice Commodore and his wife (turns out they were OK and they are still on speaking terms!) we had to make the call to cancel the sailing component of the Australia Day Three Peaks Race.
This didn't stop the fun though. Firstly competitors were tested on their knowledge of the rules of sailing. Bryan Hill and Will Palmer's experience came to the fore as they topped the class along with Melinda Richards and Robbie Lang (Melinda's legal mind on show!).
Then it was to the beach for the sand sculpting. With bonus points on offer, Balnarring Beach was soon adorned with a wombat, a platypus, the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House and many other items of Australiana. The judges had no choice but to award full marks to everyone.
The physical challenges ensued. Anna and Elodie Sleath did well in the Basketball as did Naoise, Eve and Leah Wheeler (who filled in their membership application on the day!). The Wheeler kids also won the beach run with Hugo and Louis Vandame close behind. Emma Lang and Luke Pease managed to shade the Vandame boys in the swim and also knocked off Melinda and Robbie in the Table Tennis. The spectators favourite though was the egg toss where Oscar and Rob Sleath took the points narrowly from Bryan and Will.
Just time now for the final challenge which on our national day of course was a rendition of the National Anthem. Anna and Elodie shone with angelic singing, but Bryan and Will's interpretive dance really impressed the judges.
In the end the scores were extremely close with Naoise, Eve & Leah Wheeler winning the BBQ Shapes, Rob and Oscar Sleath taking home the Lamingtons and Emma Lang and Luke Pease awarded the Tim Tams and this year's Bryan & Moira Hill Trophies for the Three Peaks Race.
