The 2014 WYC winter coaching program was a success. 14 sessions were completed with only 2 cancellations (the WYC in Balnarring offers protected sailing conditions throughout winter).
46 keen sailors from 4 different yacht clubs have sailed throughout winter on Sabre, Pacer, Laser, 420, Optimist, Finn, Hobie 16, Impulse, Nacra, Stealth, Mosquito and over a variety of sailing conditions.
Sailors have been coached on boat handling and sail tuning. They have also practiced their starts and skills around marks with practice race during all sessions. After each session, sailors attended a debrief and later received an individual report on what they managed well during the session and what they could improve.
Many sailors have made significant progress which allowed them to obtain better results when racing this summer.
Lynn Dugay and Xavier Vandame will continue to coordinate the program. The 2015 winter coaching program kicks off on Sunday May 3 and runs every fortnight. See the WYC Calendar to synchronise the scheduled dates with your electronic diary.
All sailors from Western Port and Port Philip Bay are eligible. You can enter training sessions with your yacht or a WYC Pacer or Optimist (which the club encourages).
The objective of the program is to Have Fun! but also improve your skills and confidence on the water, an alternative to competing in mixed fleet racing and for those who race regularly during summer, ensure you do not rust during winter! There will be plenty of practices races.
Some practical information: sessions will be every second Sunday mornings. Drinks and a snack will be provided, coaching will be cancelled when the wind is over 20knts but will be replaced by theory sessions.
If you are interested to join, please send an email to Lynn Dugay (landadugay2@bigpond.com) and Xavier Vandame (xvandame@msxi.com.au) as soon as possible (incl. your full details, sailing level, yacht and expected participation dates).
Looking forward to seeing you on the water!
