A very pleasant afternoon's racing with a number of new competitors on the water.
In Division 1 it was Alan and Andrew who took out the first race comfortably from Andrew Hill and Xavier and Laurinda in just their second race on the Hobie 16 in third place. We've seen Xavier's competitive streak in the Teams Racing and once he gets the knack of starting in the catamaran he and Laurinda are going to be hard to beat! Steve and Lyn sailed very well to finish 4 on corrected time but close enough to take out the heat on handicap. Adam tried to negate Xavier's French advantage by enrolling Parisien exchange student Lillia as crew, but while she had enormous fun the trapeze proved a bit of a challenge (but provided some great Go Pro footage to show her family!). In the second race Joshua jumped back on BlackJack with Adam and they managed to just squeeze out Alan and Andrew to win on aggregate. Xavier was again third and Steve and Lynn continued their improvement to take second on handicap. It might have been an even better result for Felony had they not lost count of the laps (again!) and let BlackJack through on the leg to the finish. Steve is now mounting a campaign to roster lap counters (think bikini clad models between rounds at the boxing) on the start boat. I'm not sure that will help the concentration Steve and Theodora surely won't be in favour!
Division 2 also saw very close racing with Simon's Contender beating out the Eriksson / Fijalkowski Tasar by just 7 seconds on corrected time in the first heat. Mark was close enough behind to take out the handicap honours. Simon took out the second heat a little more comfortably with John and Andrew again squeezed out by just 1 second for second place by Mark.
Controversy in Division 3 with Heat 3 being awarded to Jess Donnelly and her mum and first time crew member Bronnie. Casual observers reported Commodore Roger Crabtree crossing the finish line ahead in the club's Micron3 but, according to race box manager Pat Pedicini "Roger was in the micron and it was so small we missed it crossing the finishing line". Phil & Billy Balcombe were very close behind in their first race (the starters may have been a bit generous in giving them a litle head start!) which augers well for some good racing in the Pacers as these two families grow their sailing experience.
More drama in Division 5 where Peta Pietromonaco was super excited to be racing her Nacra Sirocco in a club race for the first time up against Brendan Corcoran who was washing the dust off Meerkat in his first race for the season. Just as the Pietromonacos were lining up for a flying start, a damaged shackle at the top of the forestay gave way and the rig came crashing down. Fortunately no injuries or major damage so hopefully we'll see Peta and Ang ripping around the course this week.
