After a great afternoon's racing, the results for the Western Port Challenge have Somers once again taking the shield with WYC in second place.
All 24 of our competing crews should be very happy with their efforts, especially our younger sailors with WYC once again taking out the Youngerset (under 21) Perpetual Trophy. We will also hold the Rod Johnson Memorial Trophy for best skipper under 16 - that honour is sitting with James Fleming who edged out Eleanor Rich. Vincent Cross was 4th in the U16 division with Alistair Gray and Will Fleming 5th (note provision results had Alistair in first place but an error was subsequently found in the timekeeping - sorry Alistair!)
Alexander Jurovic also features prominently in the results, taking third place in Division 4 and clearly the leading Youngerset competitor in that division.
Our best result in the overall standings was James Cooper who took 7th position in in A-Class. John Eriksson and Andrew Fijalkowski were 16th in their Tasar. Our catamarans all performed very well with Adam and Josh Smith finishing 18th (were neck and neck with Michelle Bursa in 12th place until Adam fell off the boat 20 meters from the finish!), Alan Burrell 20th, Lachie Gibson and Glen Douglas 22nd (even with a ripped tramp and sails that were used on the Ark!), Robert and Luke Pease 24th and Xavier Vandame and Laurinda Dugay-Grist 27th both in their first Western Port Challenge.
The most pleasing statistic from the results is that WYC had 24 starters and 24 finishers. Everyone contributed to our result, all the way down to our youngest competitor Spencer Ko who completed his first race outside the reef in his Optimist. Well done everybody!
And from the sailors, a very big thank-you to all those who helped run the event including rescue boat crews, those who arranged and served food and drinks, race recorders, those manning the radios and race box and everyone who cleaned and prepared our club to look its best for our visitors. In particular Andrew Hill who did a fabulous job in pulling such a great event together.
