6 Optimists, 4 Lasers, a 420 and a Hobie 16 left Balnarring Beach at 9.30 and we made it to Somers without incident. In strengthening southerlies all of our boats headed out for the first race at 11.30.
In Division 1, Vincent Cross and Joshua Smith managed to capsize the Hobie before the start but managed to right the boat and join the race less than a minute late and then sail a solid race to finish second.
In Division 3, it was a 1 - 2 finish for WYC with Alexander Jurovic first across the line in his Laser Radial and Alistair Gray and Will Fleming in second place in their first race in Alistair's new 420.
In Division 4 it was again 1 - 2 for WYC with James Fleming and Eleanor Rich leading the fleet home in their Laser 4.7s. Toby Cross also in a Laser 4.7 was a little further back after losing his mainsheet before the start. A little bit of a concern that our Tackers Instructor still struggles with his knots!
In Division 5, Dylan Burrell, Emma Lang, Jeremy Gray, Lucy Gray, Nicholas Jurovic and Robbie Lang all started the race in a big fleet of Optis, Hobie Hawks and Sparrows. The kids battled hard against winds that rose to 20 knots and Lucy Gray managed to complete the race in 6th place.
After a long lunch break, race organisers decided a second race could be run as the winds eased very slightly. Alexander and Alistair/Will again took out first and second in Division 3.
In Division 4, James again was first across the line with Toby 3rd and Eleanor in 5th place.
Undeterred by the challenging conditions, Robbie Lang again ventured out in his Opti and sailed very well until the last leg when a collision with a 420 put an end to his race (but fortunately not too much damage!)
All in all a great day for all the kids and an excellent regatta run by Somers which attracted nearly 50 boats. We look forward to an even bigger fleet when the regatta is back at WYC next year.
