Alexander's account of the Laser States held at Sorrento
On the 23rd to the 24th of March I sailed in the Laser state titles.
The first day had some challenging conditions because we ended sailing with wind against tide when going upwind to the 1st mark. This made it very hard to get a good start for the 1st race. In the 1st race I had a good start but was unfortunately over the line and ended up getting disqualified for it. For this race I also finished in 4th place just behind a sailor from NSW who came 2nd at the Laser nationals. The 2nd race was even more challenging because the wind had picked up a bit making the waves tower even more. In this race I had a very good start. Everyone got caught up at the pin end of the start line whilst James Fleming and I started at the boat end of the start line. This allowed me to get the front of the breeze before anyone else did giving me more speed upwind. I ended up coming around the first mark in 7th place. After rounding the mark the wind started to lighten up making it easier for me to catch up to people in the 1st downwind leg. Later that race, on the way to the last mark before the finish line, the wind picked up just enough for me to get enough speed and catch up to the people in front of me. On the last upwind leg to the finish line I managed to get past one of the people in front of me and I ended up finishing that race in 6th position.
On the 2nd day of racing we only got 1 race in because some of the sailors new to the Laser were struggling. For the only race of the day I had a great start and was 6th around the top mark. Heading down to the 1st upwind my friend Brody just managed to sneak in front of me. After going back to the 2nd mark we had a 2nd downwind leg and the wind had picked up quite a bit making it very difficult to keep the boat upright. At the end of this race I crossed the finish line in 7th place.
I am very happy with how I went in this regatta, I ended up coming 10th overall with a DSQ, 6th and 7th, I finished the regatta in 10th out of 23 laser 4.7’s and I also came 2nd Youth sailor. James Fleming also had a good regatta finishing 14th overall.
