The Hobie State Titles were held at Lake Eppalock over the long weekend
The Victorian Hobie State Titles were held over the Labour Day long weekend at Bendigo Yacht Club on Lake Eppalock, home to champion cat sailors, Greg and Brett Goodall. The first day of racing was held in patchy and gusty 5-12 kt winds. It was typical lake sailing, with very challenging conditions, being up and down and very shifty. This meant that you had to get ‘your head out of the boat’ and pick which side of the course had the wind pressure coming in at the right time or you could end up in a hole. One mistake like this could easily cause you to drop from the front of the fleet to the back. Greg Goodall did an excellent job of running 5 tricky races.
Results were close after day 1 with previous World Champion sailor Mick Butler from NSW, sailing with his son only 1 point ahead of Westernport sailors Pip Pietromonaco and James Wierzbowski with Michelle Bursa and Chelsea Haynes rounding out the top 3. Unfortunately due to lack of wind, racing on Sunday and Monday was cancelled and results stood.
In spite of the lack of wind and temperatures in the high 30’s, the regatta was very well run with great race management and the yacht club was very hospitable.
Results
Mick Butler/Patrick Butler 1st (8 points)
Pip Pietromonaco/James Wierzbowski 2nd (9 points)
Michelle Bursa/Chelsea Haynes 3rd (16 points)
